what you seek is actually seeking you

what you seek is actually seeking you

what we come to the mat looking for, and what we find instead

"what you seek is seeking you."

rumi

there's something beautiful about the idea that what we're searching for might also be finding its way to us. ayurveda acknowledges this through two axioms: like attracts like and like increases like.

rumi's wisdom offers us a different way of moving through life. instead of believing that we must chase every answer, fix every problem, or work harder to become who we want to be, perhaps we can pause long enough and recognize what is already unfolding.

we often come to yoga looking for something specific. relief from a stiff back. a way to manage stress. more strength and mobility. a quieter mind. a little moment of peace in an otherwise busy life.

however, somewhere along the way, something else may happen. we find our practice offers more than we expected. we listen to our bodies instead of pushing through discomfort, recognizing that we don't need to avoid or run away from an uncomfortable situation. we have practiced breathing through discomfort. we begin recognizing the difference between being busy and being present. we notice that a few moments of conscious breathing changes how we respond to a difficult day or situation.

perhaps we came looking for flexibility and found patience. we came looking for relaxation and found a little more trust in ourselves. we came looking for an hour away from the demands of life and discovered tools that help us navigate those demands with greater ease.

sometimes what we seek is not exactly what we find. and sometimes, what we find is what we needed all along.

you never know what you might find when you give yourself the time and space for looking inward.

so, take a breath. let your shoulders soften. give yourself permission to slow down.

you don't have to have it all figured out. you don't need to force the next step.

many times, the first step toward finding what you seek is simply making space for it.
